Grow lights

There are many different types of light sources used for growing plants:

  • Incandescence - standard household light bulbs, low power efficiency, not much used
  • Fluorescent lights - available in a wide range of spectrum's, most used industrially
  • High-intensity discharge lamps (HID) - very high light power output (lumen, visible light power/flux), generates a lot of heat
  • Light-emitting diodes (LED) - high power efficiency, long lifetime, good spectrum control
  • High-pressure sodium (HPS/SON) - more energy in the red part of the light, promotes blooming and fruiting
  • Metal halide (MH) - more light in the blue and violet parts of the light spectrum, more sunlight like, promotes plants in earlier developmental stages (growing)
